Useful Tips
Below are a few tips to help you prepare for your trip, stay comfortable, and make the most of your time here.
  • Visa
Most nationalities will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online before arrival. It’s a quick process and usually approved within a few days.
  • Insurance
Getting travel and health insurance is strongly recommended. If you’re planning to travel outside Nairobi, consider registering with rescue.co. They provide reliable road and air evacuation services in East Africa.
  • SIM card
You can buy a Safaricom SIM card at the airport or in town (bring your passport). Safaricom SIM also gives you access to M-Pesa, Kenya’s mobile payment system.
  • Paying in Kenya
Most hotels, restaurants, and shops accept credit and debit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard. Small markets or local cafes might prefer M-Pesa or Kenya Shillings cash. You can exchange foreign currency at the airport, at the Forex counter in Village Market mall, and at most banks across the city.
  • Transport
Public transport isn’t ideal for visitors, but taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber and Bolt work well and are reliable in Nairobi and most towns. We also recommend using a trusted local taxi service, Quince, available at +254 725 952 229 or quincetours14@gmail.com.
  • Weather
February in Nairobi is warm and sunny. Expect daytime temperatures around 26–28°C (78–82°F). It’s usually dry, so light summer clothes are perfect, but bring a light jacket or shawl for the evenings. Down on the coast, places like Diani and Watamu are tropical and humid, with highs around 30°C (86°F).
  • Packing
Single use plastic bags are banned in Kenya — please don’t bring or use them. We also encourage everyone to travel sustainably: bring a reusable water bottle, avoid single-use plastics, and help us reduce waste.
Kenya uses Type G power plugs (the same as the UK) and runs on 240 volts. Bring an adaptor if your devices use a different plug type.
The Kenyan sun is strong – we are at the equator! Make sure you bring sunscreen and a hat.
Pack insect repellent, particularly if you’ll be visiting the coast or national parks.
  • Health
Vaccines: Please check your country’s travel guidelines for recommended vaccines. A yellow-fever certificate is often required if you’re coming from, or transiting through, an endemic country. Routine vaccines such as tetanus, hepatitis A/B, and typhoid are also advisable.

Drink only bottled or filtered water — avoid tap water.

The hospitals closest to the event venues and recommended hotels are M.P. Shah Hospital, The Nairobi Hospital and The Aga Khan University Hospital.
  • Shopping & Souvenirs
    • Kenya is full of beautiful handmade crafts — beaded jewellery, wooden carvings, woven baskets, and colourful Maasai shukas (blankets) make perfect keepsakes.
    • If you enjoy bargaining, visit the lively Maasai Market, held at different locations around Nairobi each day including the Village Market mall on Friday — perfect for those staying at the Trademark Hotel. For fixed prices and a calm browsing experience, try Spinners Web, which offers curated local art, décor, and gifts.
    • For fashion lovers, Village Market features Kenyan clothing and jewellery brands that blend traditional style with modern design — ideal for unique choices.
  • Safety
Nairobi is a vibrant and bustling city — just keep the usual big-city common sense in mind:
    • Keep car doors locked and windows rolled up when driving or in taxis and don’t use your phone through open windows — quick grab thefts happen.
    • Avoid walking alone at night, especially in quiet or unfamiliar areas.
    • Don’t leave bags or valuables unattended in public spaces.
    • Use ATMs inside shopping centres or banks, not on the street.
    • If unsure, ask hotel staff or locals for advice — Kenyans are wonderfully friendly and happy to help.
